BLOT! is Gaurav Malaker, a producer, musician and DJ based out of Delhi, India. On its face, most associate the name with pioneering minimal, modern house and techno from India but every small detail adds up to create a much wider Multiverse. In truth, Malaker draws from his technical expertise in music-making to impact the culture around his sound via (m)any other mediums that present themselves. What started as a live audio-visual project in 2007 has had a fertile run in the decade since, backed consistently by distinct concepts, strong visual design sensibilities, original installation work and a touring ethic that’s remained committed to carving out new audiences for a young industry. Its an approach that’s uniquely his, cementing his credibility as one of very few local acts today that evoke a feeling, a following, and an aesthetic. Right from being voted into GQ’s 50 Most Influential Young Indians list and winning several awards like VH1 Soundnation’s ‘Best Electronic Act’ or MyFav’s ‘Artist Of The Year’ and ‘Best Techno DJ,’ to regular European tours since 2009, which include the likes of London South Bank Centre, Nuits Sonores in Lyon, and the legendary Tresor and Bar25 in Berlin. From initiating projects like the first-of-its-kind interdisciplinary Unbox Festival in India and establishing the Asian imprint Qilla Records, to his most recent release on Pablo Bolivar’s imprint Seven Villas Music (2019) that has been lauded across the industry. Whether it was the acclaimed country-wide tour of the BLOT! Live set, with three hours of then-unreleased, original music or his debut performance at Awakenings 2019 - these achievements bar ely scratch the surface though. Ultimately, BLOT! thrives because Malaker’s output stems from strong foundations. In building worlds that reflect his inherent expansiveness, there’s always room for a few surprises. And even more for new audiences to grow with him, no matter where he goes.
