Monoswezi are a collective of musicians from Mozambique, Norway,
Sweden and Zimbabwe based in Norway. With a common passion for
African music in general, and music from Zimbabwe and Mozambique in
particular. Monoswezi seeks a musical expression, where respect for
tradition is combined with different references and experiences from pop
and jazz. Monoswezi performs both traditional music, and compositions
by the band members.
Monoswezi has worked together for apr 10 years, released 5 albums,
touring Europe, Africa and Asia. We started of playing traditional music
from Zimbabwe and Mozambique with a jazz influence. On our latest
album ''Shanu'', we play more original compositions by the band
members, more influenced by pop and electronic music, with the use of
mellotron, different keyboard and synthesizers, and more guitar than on
the previous albums.
Our last tour before Covid was India in November/December 2019 and
was one of the three best musical highlights of 2019 in India (together with
Zakir Hussain and U2s concert in Mumbai) according to Hindustan Times:
'This year, the part-African, part-Scandinavian jazz band Monoswezi put
up a stirring and immersive performance at a few Indian venues. It’s rare
to find such authenticity in any live music, especially one that is so eclectic
in its influences.”
Monoswezi has recent years been touring Norway, Sweden, Denmark,
Germany, Croatia, Hungary, England, Vietnam, Singapore, Hong Kong,
Malaysia, China, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, South Africa and India, with
concerts at the London Jazz Festival, Radio Concert in BBC, Jazz Ahead
Bremen, Mela Festival, Penang Island Jazz Festival, the BBC's stag at
The Latitude Festival (broadcast on BBC Late Junction), inMusic festival
in Zagreb, Budapest Ritmo Festival, Udaipur World Music Fetival etc.
